Hebrews 5:7-9 NIV
[7] During the days of Jesus’ life on earth, he offered up prayers and petitions with fervent cries and tears to the one who could save him from death, and he was heard because of his reverent submission. [8] Son though he was, he learned obedience from what he suffered [9] and, once made perfect, he became the source of eternal salvation for all who obey him.
The son of God was sent in human form to walk in our shoes, feel our pain, experience our humanity and also pay the price for sin that we could not pay, so that we could not experience His kind of life. He is the Son of God yet whilst he was on earth, the verses above make it clear that he offered prayers and petitions with cries and tears to the One who could save Him from death. If the son of God could be subject to such experiences, how would I experience the life He offers if I do not also walk in His steps? It was His total submission and embrace of the purpose and plan of God for Him that has opened the door for salvation and redemption for all who come to put their faith and trust in Him. He is the Son, yet it pleased God His Father to allow Him suffer the pain and curse of dying on a tree, so that by His sacrifice, He could offer life, full and free to all who will take up the life that has now been secured.
The experience of the Son of God is a shadow or foretaste of what is in store for me too. To enjoy the benefits of the inheritance the death and resurrection of Jesus has secured for me, I have to walk in His shoes. A life of obedience must be my daily routine, even in the face of opposition, resistance and pressure to compromise. Do you imagine what life would have been if Jesus had not died on the cross? Based on the knowledge of God revealed in the old testament, His hatred of sin, and the examples we read of how He punished sin, how many of us would be alive today, if not for the grace and mercy that have now been made available to us, because the right price for sin was paid? This calls for sober reflection, and a commitment to living right. Jesus was made perfect through obedience and surrender, and we will also have the same experience if allow the blessings of His death and resurrection be real in us. He has done his part; how would you respond? God's time of favour is here.
