Seek the Lord [inquire for Him, inquire of Him, and require Him as the foremost necessity of your life], all you humble of the land who have acted in compliance with His revealed will and have kept His commandments; seek righteousness, seek humility [inquire for them, require them as vital]. It may be you will be hidden in the day of the Lord's anger. Zephaniah 2:3 AMPC
For all who read this, let it be known that the day of the Lord is coming. It is not a day to be taken lightly, or a day to be ignored. That day is a day of judgment and reckoning, when ALL men will be judged on the basis of what they did with the life they were given. That day is described in some frightening ways that the best way I can avoid the terrible portions of that day is to learn the way of escape prescribed by God, and be careful to obey.
So, first things first: SEEK the Lord. You do not sit down, fold your arms and expect that what you seek will come looking for you. You have to get up, find out where the thing you seek is, and actively pursue it. And it matters WHO you seek, not WHAT. Men seek so many things, yet just one thing is important, and it is the Lord. The world will give you 'viable' options, and seek to distract you by giving you visible and audible options, but as long as it is not the Lord you hold on to, it will end up in distress. The day of the Lord is coming; what will it find in your hand?
His love for me will not let Him let go, and so he warns. Today's extract is directed at people who are described as humble, and have acted in line with the revealed will and kept the commandments of God. Yet, to them, God still says: SEEK me. If this could be said to people who are called humble, imagine what the fate of the proud, haughty and God-haters would be. And as God's Word asks: If the righteous are scarcely saved, what do you think will be fate of the wicked and ungodly?
Repeat: those who are asked to seek God here are already referred to as righteous and humble, yet they are charged: seek humility and righteousness. You can never have enough of this God. You will never come to the conclusion that you now have or know enough of this God, to be able to take you into the place of eternal relevance. No man on this side of eternity has known all there is to know about God, so we need to keep seeking Him. He needs to be all we care to see or know. He must hold our full attention, or else the day will meet us distracted and totally unprepared.
That day is coming. The day is outside my control so there is nothing I can do about it. That day is coming, and it is a day of wrath. Imagine the price paid for sin: the life of God's Son, then imagine what it is like to reject that price to the end. What else can speak for you before the judgment seat of God if you have not believed in the One sent to save you from the coming judgement?
As I wait for that day, I ask God for strength to live right. I ask Him to keep me focused on the things that are truly important. I do not want to be distracted by the presents I see; I want to keep the Presence of God as the one and only focus, as I wait for His appearing. He is coming; are you ready? His time of favour is here.
