This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us. 1 John 5:14 NIV

Today's extract is addressed to those who 'believe in the name of the son of God'. Quite specific, isn't it? It's not about knowing the name or being quite familiar with it, but believing in it. Whatever you believe in will drive your thinking, actions and reactions. You can determine someone's value system by that person's pursuits and priorities. So, what's your status? Does God know you as his own, who believe in Him? Does He have reason to think that maybe your heart is not totally given over to Him, and there is room for some other options? This is a crucial question that you must answer right, because the rest of the extract rests on that answer.

So my allegiance is settled, I can approach my master and ask for anything I need. There is a caveat here: asking in line with the will of God. If God is my one and only priority, asking in line with his will is not a struggle. If God holds my heart, the outflow of that heart will reflect its ownership and directorship. As long as there are competing authorities for attention, it will be difficult to align with God's perfect will. And I must not assume that God knows what I need; relationships require nurturing and constant engagement, and what better way is there to keep my relationship with God healthy than by talking with Him every chance I get.

And I note the ending: 'He hears us'. It is not an automatic yes, or no, or not yet. He hears us; he loves to hear us speak to Him. He wants to relate with us regularly. There are things we may ask that aligns with His will, but not his timing. There are things we may ask that may be right for us, but we need to learn some management lessons before He releases them. How would I know what to do if I do not know God personally? How would I survive if I take decisions based on emotions or feelings?

God waits for me. He wants to do what He alone can do in my life. He is Lord, Saviour and Master, but He doesn't force Himself on anyone. The power to choose Him is given to all men, and the release of the amazing blessings in store are for all who have submitted to his Lordship and Authority. Have you? He waits for you. His time of favour is here.
