Humble yourselves therefore under the mighty hand of God, that he may exalt you in due time: 1 Peter 5:6 KJV
One prayer I have learnt to avoid is to ask God to humble me. I am not sure it is God's job to do, because if He has to do it, a high price may be paid. I believe the reason why I am asked to humble myself is because I am the One who has to learn my place from God's perspective and act accordingly. If I think of myself quite highly, I will act accordingly. If I think I am important, it will show in my attitude and response to other people. God will not go against the exercise of my free will, but He will apply the consequences to my actions, whatever they are.
So, the first lesson is this: I must do all I can to know and learn my place in God's creation. God does not demand something from me without supplying the grace and strength to do it. If He asks me to do something, it is because He has provided the required grace. That is the place of the mighty hand of God. It is a mighty hand; one that can do mighty things. It is a mighty hand that can and has fought and won several battles. It is a hand that the verse before today's extract says opposes anyone who is proud. It is a mighty hand; you do not want it fighting against your interests.
So, with the working of God's grace upon my life, I learn that I am not indispensable. I must place myself under the right hand; not every hand is to exercise authority over my life. I must be careful to do all that God commands, so I can get all that He has promised. And I leave the timing of his dealings with me in His hands. Is there anyone who can rush God into anything? Can I really pray anything that is not God's will into existence? Would I not be better off waiting for God's time and season of manifestation? It is his earth and He determines times and seasons by His wisdom. My life must not be different. I must wait for Him, trust His dealings and His process, and rejoice at His results. His season of exaltation will come; I will enjoy His best if I wait for Him. Don't be in a hurry, and don't give up easily. As long as God gives life, there is no limit to the amazing things He has in store for us. His time of favour is here.
