For the earth shall be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the LORD, as the waters cover the sea. Habakkuk 2:14 KJV
It will be nice to have some context to the extract for today. Israel had sinned and were punished by other nations which were arguably worse than they. Even the prophet Habakkuk had to question God's fairness, if He would use a nation with worse sins to punish the sins of his own people. Imagine Babylin, with all its small gods, able to conquer Jerusalem, empty the temple of all its treaures, and then burn the city gates with fire. Unfortunately, with God, there is no small or big sin, and by God's nature, He can decide the mode, instruments and tenor of the punishment for sin. His mercy is great, but He does not condone sin.
Today's extract speaks of that which is God's perfect will for the earth. Yes, sin had come and it is here, but God's grace is greater than our sin. It is God's will for us to know, follow, serve and eventually reign with him in eternity. No matter what the present reality is, there is an eternal reality that God wants to birth in me. The passage for today makes reference to the sea: a great body of salt water that covers much of the earth broadly. That definition reflects the fact that the sea has definite contents as well as a definite scope or boundary. The sea will not be the sea if it was not the size referred to here: a great body of water. Yet, in all its greatness, God defines its boundaries for it. Does that not make it clear that there is nothing created by God that does not answer to God, either willingly or otherwise.
If the sea can fill the place where it has been assigned, and till today, no effort by man has been able to completely displace or relocate it, imagine the effect of God's promise about the knowledge of His glory filling the earth. If till today, the sea continues to thrive in all its glory, in line with God's command at creation, you can also trust God's Word that says that the earth too will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of God. And as we take stock of the mess the world is in right now, does it not look like we need a new perspective, focus and strategy? The old way of thinking has failed; strength and guile can no longer keep you safe from harm. What will work will be the knowledge of God I am able to get and preserve.
God wants me to know Him. It is this knowledge that will see me through the seasons of uncertainty and fear. Whether I accept it or not, God is God. That is a fact that is not in dispute. However, what I do with that fact is equally important. Does it move me to promote God's glory in all I do and say? Is God's glory evident in the way I relate with other people? The season of the manifestation of the word for today is coming; i can either be a promoter of that which is coming, or I can be a victim of that which is coming. By my personality, pursuits, priorities and perspectives, I make God attractive or unattractive to other people. Note the word: shall. Whether I want it or not, it will happen. I take stock again today: is my life a place where this can be made manifest? God's time of favour is here.
