Once more Jesus addressed the crowd. He said, “I am the Light of the world. He who follows Me will not walk in the darkness, but will have the Light of life.” John 8:12 AMP
Again we come to the matter of light, and we will again repeat our working definition: 'the natural agent that stimulates sight and makes things visible'. It is difficult to determine how light became a natural agent, or how it was created, but we know that its first mention was at creation. It was spoken of against the backdrop of the deep darkness that covered the earth at the time. For God to really work, he needed that which is of himself, and he then spoke light into existence. All that followed are the results of the light that came first and till today, we see the effect and impact of light.
Light is such that nothing is hidden from it. It makes things in darkness visible. How would I know where I stand with God, if the light of God does not reveal me to myself? The devil will have me content with where I am, but if I will rise to the place where God intends, I have to seek that which the light reveals and take the right steps to correct accordingly. Jesus made this clear to the crowd that followed him: don't be content with just existing, and living from day to day. I have more than the norm, the usual or the expected; I have eternal life in me.
Am I content being in the crowd, taking all that happens to me as part of the package of life, with no hope for that which God promises? Jesus understood the problem of the crowd: it is content with blending in. It does not want its activities to be revealed, and it will do all it can to pretend that all is well. However, the light will not permit that. The call by Jesus here makes it clear that the crowd's priorities are not His own priorities. He wants to give life and light to all who come to him. He wants to take away all that supports or promotes darkness so that His light can reign in and shine through me.
But as always, he will not compel me or force himself on anyone. Just as he introduced himself to the crowd here, so does he tell me all I stand to gain in and from him. The world can't give you what it does not have. It does not have true light, and that is why it is wrong to set your life by what the world promotes. I have to decide to follow Christ. He has all I need to succeed in this life. He is the Light that reveals all the deep things of darkness. In him, eternal life is secure and assured. Remember: all that we see down here will perish with the world, and only that which is of God will live forever. Do I really have him? Do you? God's time of favour is here.
