In the last day, that great day of the feast, Jesus stood and cried, saying, If any man thirst, let him come unto me, and drink. He that believeth on me, as the scripture hath said, out of his belly shall flow rivers of living water. John 7:37-38 KJV
Context and Charge:
Feasts were instituted by God to mark various milestones in the lives of the people of Israel. These feasts were the Passover, Unleavened bread, Firstfruits, Weeks, Trumpets, Atonement and Tabernacles. The last one mentioned: Tabernacles, is the one being considered in the verse before us today and was a reminder of the time when Israel lived in tents, before they inherited the promised land. One danger for human beings is the tendency to forget the WHY behind the WHAT that we do. We can become so used to a thing that after some time, it loses significance and meaning. This was where the people of Israel were now: a lot of feasting, but no idea of the message behind the feasts. Many days spent celebrating, but with no idea of the Person and Purpose behind the celebrations. Do I know the person and purpose behind my perspiration and pursuits?
The prayer is that we will not be caught up in the motions and then forget the essence of our celebrations. Jesus came to the feast, and after a number of days, had to speak out, directing the hearts of the people back to the right path. The people had left Jesus behind, like his parents did when he was 12 years old, and they had journeyed on for so many years. With God, it is never too late to retrace your steps, repent, return and be restored. This was the message from Christ then, and is the message now: Come to ME. I am the only one who can truly satisfy. No matter how deep the longing is, or how long it has persisted without being fulfilled, you can find true satisfaction only in ME. Do not just come because everyone is doing it, or because it is convenient; do it out of faith that I am the answer to all of life's questions.
Conviction and Conclusion:
When I come in faith, I come with the clear understanding that Jesus is the answer to all my questions. The work He does in me, when I come to Him, is such that it must manifest out of me. When I have totally surrendered to Him, there is a spring that He births and sustains in me, that will continue to flow unhindered out of me. Jesus invites me to come and drink of Him; what I get is rivers of living water. What I take in reflects what pours out of me. He is the source of all good things, and His work in me has eternal consequences. The living water here is a picture of the life of God in me, and nothing can stop it from flowing, as long as I stay connected. Forget the stale promises of the world; it cannot give you what it does not have. Come to the source; He is ALL you need for life and Godliness. God's time of favour is here.
