Whoever says he abides in Him ought [as a personal debt] to walk and conduct himself in the same way in which He walked and conducted Himself. 1 John 2:6 AMPC
Context and Charge:
It is easy to say anything; the mouth has the power to say whatever it is it likes. God himself also knows the power of the tongue, and James says it so well, calling the tongue a poison. God is also the epitome of power; His own words are very powerful, as seen from the story of creation, where God spoke and everything He said came to pass exactly as God wanted it to be. If I am a child of this same God, I carry the nature of God in me, and of course, the same creative power in my words. I cannot afford to speak carelessly; I cannot afford to live the way the people of the world live. It is by the words of a man's mouth that he is able to access the depth and reach of God's grace. If I understand this, I will not speak carelessly, or live carelessly.
If I say I am a child of God, I owe a debt. That debt must be paid with a life of actions, decisions and measures that align with that debt. A man who owes a debt will not rest until the debt is paid. If I claim to abide in God, the fruit of my life will always show it. Abiding is NOT a temporary arrangement, where a man walks in and out of his residence whenever he wants. You do not get to come in or go out whenever you please; it is like citizenship where you pledge allegiance to a country. You live by the rules of the country, and pay your taxes and dues to that country. It is the same in the spiritual also; when I become a Christian, I have sworn allegiance to that new country. This is the one time where dual citizenship is not possible. Where do you stand? Who are you?
Conviction and Conclusion:
The fruit of a life that is totally surrendered to God cannot be ignored. I have the perfect example of Jesus as the picture of a life that God accepts. When it is time to make decisions, who do I seek to please: God or the flesh? This is not one of those times where corporate fellowship alone can help; it is a personal debt that nobody can pay on your behalf. I cannot hide behind a crowd; I must stand alone, conducting myself in a way and manner that reflects my residence status. It is my personal life that will then flow out as a public witness to other people, making my life attractive to other people. I am God's eyes, ears, lips, feet and heart. Men must want to come and know the God I serve and follow. Does this describe me in any way? God's time of favour is here.
