For I consider [from the standpoint of faith] that the sufferings of the present life are not worthy to be compared with the glory that is about to be revealed to us and in us! Romans 8:18 AMP
The Context and Focus:
The chapter from which today's verse is taken makes a very precise statement: 'there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus'. Your location is the determinant of your allocation. What you get flows from who and where you are. It has to be emphasised however that being in Christ is critical, but it does not prevent life from happening to me. In fact, I reckon that the reason why God leaves me on earth, after being saved, is to display his power, splendour, endurance, glory and perseverance in and through me. How would the world know who God is, if there is no life to make him known? How would the world be attracted to the Father, if his children don't point him out, through their conversation and conduct? The same chapter is the one which states that the whole earth is eagerly awaiting the manifestation of the sons of God. If I am one, it is a taboo to hide the light of God in me. If I am one, it wouldn't take time for men to know that I an different. Please just note that the category of people referred to is defined by the first verse: 'those who are in Christ Jesus'.
The Message:
For those who are in Christ, just like the earthly experiences of Christ, we must also be ready for pressure. Our convictions and confidence will make other men uncertain and uncomfortable. Our principles will challenge the status quo around us, and of course, men will push back. As you read the verses of the Bible, you see quite clearly the pressure and resistance the men of faith had to withstand, as they stood for God in their places of work, business or society. As long as God remains the same, and His standards have not been lowered, we who claim to be His children must expect the same. We know God has power to save and deliver, yet most times, he will wait until we are in it before he delivers us. Daniel could have been kept away from the lions' den, but God decided to take glory from delivering him inside the den. Stephen was stoned to death, and it would seem that God was silent, but who says it has to happen the way we want it, for it to glorify God? If I can always explain it rationally, it may not leave much room for faith. Will God be God if my human mind could comprehend him fully?
The Conclusion:
This is where faith comes in. Faith is the power to see things in the Spirit, even before they ever come to the physical realm, and even if they never manifest on this side of eternity. Faith, as defined by God, is the assurance of things we hope for, and the evidence of things not yet seen. By faith, we trust in the finished work of Christ on the cross, and we depend on His grace for our daily walk with and work for Him. This is why we are not fazed by whatever God allows, because we know he is working in and through us that which will glorify Him. These earthly sufferings are but a step toward the fulfilment of God's purpose for us. No matter how hard or long they last, they are not to be compared to the glory that is coming. God will use my life as the platform for the manifestation of His glory. Sufferings are temporary; God's glory is eternal. This earth has an expiry date; a new heaven and a new earth are coming, whose glory far outshine anything we can see now. It is something to look forward to, and to plan towards. Would you trust Him with your life? God's time of favour is here.
