Psalms 32:8 AMP
I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you [who are willing to learn] with My eye upon you.
The Context and Focus:
Again, the audience is very important. This is a psalm of David, titled the 'blessedness of forgiveness and of trust in God'. It is quite instructive that this is a psalm by a man God Himself referred to as a man after His heart. David had a relationship with God that impacted every area of his life. Of course, being human showed at different stages of the life of David, but he always found his way back to God. There was an incident in the life of this man that led to God punishing him to generations after him, but God also testified of Himself that his steadfast love will never be taken away from David's house, as he took it away from Saul. Out of the many lessons that the life of David may teach, one quite important one is to take careful thought to my actions and reactions today. There are eternal consequences attached to the things I do, as well as the way I do them. God wants to lead, guide and direct, but He does not go against the exercise of my freewill.
The Message:
He gives grace for me to make an approach, and to know His mind over any matter, but once I have known what is right and wrong, I do have the choice on what to do. Look at the verse above: ' I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go' shows that proper guidance by God is not an overnight sensation, but the result of daily listening and obeying. God speaks, but because of the noise around due to competing interests, I have to be deliberate and decisive about hearing what he has to say. God will not compete for attention; He speaks to those who are willing to take the time to listen. Teaching is not a one-off event, but one that takes time and effort. In the same way, if I will be taught properly, I have to devote time and attention to the principles and practices being taught. God has a way He wants me to walk, and it is only by listening to His voice that I can know what today's guidance is. What worked yesterday may not work today, because each day needs its own guidance and instructions.
The Conclusion:
'I will counsel you, who are willing to learn' shows that for the counsel to be effective and impact, it needs my cooperation and submission. This is the power that I have been given, and one that must be used very carefully. Counselling, even by human standards, is a voluntary thing. The wealth of knowledge and information available cannot be forced down anyone's throat, but if I come to God with a sincere heart, not with preconceived notions, or a hypocritical heart, I will receive his insights for life and Godliness. He promises to be with me, and to put His eye on me. Just picture it: everywhere you go, God is with you. Everywhere you turn, the Lord is watching you. Every time the Bible records that the Lord was with someone, look at how the person ended: Joseph, Daniel, Paul or Deborah, the impact is undeniable. God's eyes run to and fro throughout the whole earth, to show Himself strong in the behalf of them whose walk is blameless. Am I open to God's leading, or am I bent on doing my own thing? Consequences follow actions. I had better be sure God is in control. God's time of favour is here.
