‭Matthew 7:24 AMP‬
[24] “So everyone who hears these words of Mine and acts on them, will be like a wise man [a far-sighted, practical, and sensible man]who built his house on the rock. [Luke 6:47-49]

There is a general statement, as well as a specific statement. For all who have physical ears, you are able to hear. The ears are fixed right at the place where God intends them to be, and they function as one of the physical senses that man is able to use to process the information that comes on a regular basis. It is what you get that then determines the next step, which is the specific statement about acting. What makes the verse above quite instructive is that it impacts both physical and spiritual hearing. The ears will receive a lot of information from films, movies, TV, radio, the internet and of course, books, such as the bible. In some instances, the information you get is healthy, but there are many times when, in search of genuine and critical information, you come across quite destructive and evil information. What do you do in that instance?

My response to what I hear has long-term implications, as we can see in the verse above. All of us as human beings hear things, and of course, we all act on what we hear on one form or another. However, hearing and acting are not enough; it has to be the right action that matches the information received, so it can lead to the conclusion set out in the verse above. I must choose to hear the words of Christ, because they are the words that can guarantee wisdom. It is good to read books for knowledge, and to be able to impact the world you have been placed in, but the wisdom God teaches by His Word cannot be obtained from the best of literature. Only the true source can give it, and it is by surrender and obedience that I can constantly have access to all the riches of grace available in and through Christ.

In fact, the man who hears and then also acts in accordance with the standards laid down by the Lord is presented as a wise man who built his house on the rock. Think about this: a house does not get built overnight. There is the planning, execution and finishing stages. The foundation is that hidden part of a house that holds the beautiful structure we see. The rock is that foundation on which anything that will stand the test of time must be built. I will not get the whole house built in one day, but by daily obedience and sanctification, I add brick by brick to that which God is helping me build. If it is His Word that holds all things in place, how can I hope to achieve anything that lasts outside of Him? I must just not hear; I must make sure my action matches God's expectation. He will not bless what He does not condone. God's time of favour is here.
