I will say of the Lord, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust. Psalm 91:2 KJV

There is no one directly credited with this psalm, though Moses is the one credited with the psalm before. It is a psalm that celebrates the greatness of God, and the futility of human connections. Too many times, the world will prescribe solutions to problems of its own making, and of course, the problems never go away. The world can never solve a problem that is as a result of its own failings. How can the world offer you safety and protection from the dangers that are as a result of fallen man? How can the world keep you safe from the power and effect of sin, when the world itself is not safe from the effects of sin?

For me to say the words of today's extract, I need a personal experience. My words are a direct outflow of the contents of my heart, and the reality of my life. No matter how hard I say or how many times I say it, if there is no inner conviction, it is all a waste of time. And it also matters of whom I speak: the Lord, or other false lords who are pretenders and cannot save themselves, not to talk of other people. God is different things to different people at different times, but He is the same God. He is so amazing that he can meet the needs of seven billion people in the world all at the same time. For this writer, God was his refuge and fortress. You don't use such words if you are not expecting a fight.

Calling God a refuge and a fortress means knowing who God is from personal experience. If I have never fought a war, how would I appreciate the value of a fortress? If I have never been tired, really stressed out and in need of a quiet place for refreshment, how would I know the value of a refuge? The writer had come to a final conclusion: God was all he needed. It did not matter if God would not give him exactly what he wanted, but he was stuck on God, no matter what God brought. I have to come to the same conclusion: God has to be enough. If he isn't, I will definitely pursue after things that can destroy. If He is, then I am sorted out for life.

I note the use of the words: MY and I. Both words are used at least 5 times in the verse. Naturally, too much I is at the centre of pride, but in this instance, it is a sign of confidence in the God he had come to know. He has to be enough; He does not play the lottery, or lead people to place bets on what options to pursue. He is the product of certainty; the assurance that He is in control and that no matter what comes, He has it all under control. I trust him only, as vain is the help of man. God's time of favour is here.
