Right Power!
Context and Charge:
Again, we look at the book of one-line messages, with each sentence practically a full message on its own. The man who is credited with most of the words in the book of Proverbs was Solomon, a man blessed by God with wisdom. If God is the sole inspiration behind your perspiration, impact and impartation are non-negotiable. However, if I have found alternative ways to get things done, God will simply watch while I labour and perspire without results. That power of choice is both a blessing and a burden, and it is important that I know and understand this power, so I can harness and channel it appropriately.
The power of choice covers different areas of my life, but today's extract speaks about the tongue. This is actually a small part of our bodies, and is hidden from view unless and until someone opens his mouth, but it holds the power of life and death over a life. How does this work? A careful consideration of God and how He works helps put it all in perspective. He spoke and all that we see today came to be. That same creative power is in all that God formed, because we are made in His likeness. It is not a responsibility to be treated lightly.
Contention and Conclusion:
It is a warning to all of us to be wary and careful of the power of the tongue. Check out a few uses: we praise and worship God with it, but when friends offend us, we are quick to remind them of all we had done for them. We pretend to like people and praise them so we can get something from them, and then turn around to speak evil of the same person. It cannot be as God planned it, that what was given to use for the glory of the giver has now been turned around into an object of ridicule and scorn. I can't use one part of my body for good purposes and then seek to use other parts for sinful purposes all at the same time. That would be similar to hypocrisy, which God does not like.
He has made his will clear: if I want to enjoy life, the secret lies in the usage of the parts He has given me. I consider it a privilege to be able to speak; not everyone on earth can. I must live in daily appreciation of all I have been given, never seeking to promote my selfish interests over and above those of other people. If you love it, it means you can die for it. I must therefore be sure that all that God has given me is used to His glory so I can have and enjoy the price, which is eternal life. God's time of favour is here.
