The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: He leadeth me beside the still waters. Psalm 23:1-2 KJV
The Inspiration:
The journey into the fullness of God's grace and favour starts with a personal encounter with Him. How do I look forward to all the amazing things He has promised if I don't even know him at all? How do I hear him if I am not acquainted with His voice or open to His leading and direction? The man who wrote the words of today's verse was David, who God Himself testified of as a man after His heart. This did not happen overnight, but was the result of a daily and regular search for God. David wanted to always be in the presence of God, and looked forward to being in his temple. He knew God and his laws, and even when he sinned and was reminded of what he did and was punished, his love for God knew no bounds. It is not a wonder that he could refer to God as His shepherd. Of course, a shepherd will have many sheep, but it is the sign of His power, might and grace that he can deal with each one in a special way. He knows each sheep by name, and leads them out to pasture. He is able to keep and preserve all who come into the sheepfold, depending on Him for all that they need.
The Contention:
With God as the Shepherd, all who belong to his fold do not want. It does not mean that you will get ALL you want, but whatever is required for you to be all the Shepherd wants you to be will be provided by Him. In a world that celebrates acquisitions and possessions at the expense of a personal relationship with God, this message is apt for this season. A man's life does not consist of the abundance of the things he possesses, but in the reality of the presence of God. With God, I actually have all I need, because He is and has all I really need for life and Godliness. Healing: He is the Jehovah Rapha. In need: he is the Provider. In danger: He is my Refuge and Fortress. In pain: He is my joy and peace. In fear: He is Love personified, who takes away all fear. It does not matter the severity of the storm that comes, or the wind or fire that blows or burns; as long as I am in the sheepfold, I am safe and secure from all alarms. I must note that these benefits are not mine by right, but by relationship. Am I one of God's sheep, or am I still in charge of my own life?
The Conclusion:
As part of his sheepfold, there will be times to work, and times to rest. He leads me out in the morning, feeds me and then allows me work to impact the world I have been placed in. I return to the fold to rest, refresh and be recharged to go again. The world will want me to keep running after imaginary success, but in God, I have the person and presence that guarantees peace. Even when I think I can't take a break, he can make me. Sometimes, things happen that we cannot explain, but at the end, we find ourselves rested and refreshed, ready to go again. Sometimes, when God needs to reach us, he keeps us in a quiet place where we can hear His still small voice. He leads me where he knows I can get what is appropriate for the season I am in. The world has no such benefits and cannot offer you any, because it does not know God. You cannot give what you don't have. The world can only offer you tribulations and tough times; in God, we have peace that the world cannot define, limit or tamper with. Who would you rather follow? Which side would you rather choose? God's time of favour is here.
