Sweet God!

Sweet God!

Psalm 34:8 AMPC
[8] O taste and see that the Lord [our God] is good! Blessed (happy, fortunate, to be envied) is the man who trusts and takes refuge in Him.

It is quite interesting to read about the sense of taste when it comes to proving who God is. You have to ask yourself how the concept of food, drink or anything processed through the unique sense of taste relates to a God who transcends time, space or anything that man can think of. God, in His sovereignity and wisdom, has given human beings the sense of taste, among others. We can recognize several types of tastes, each with its own evolutionary purpose, such as identifying spoiled foods or toxic substances. We have receptors for five kinds of tastes, such as sour, sweet, salty, bitter and savoury. Online sources will tell you that scientists are currently researching other tastes such as alkaline (the opposite of sour), metallic, and water-like tastes. Think of the complexities that have been raised just by the simple sense of taste, and see how great God is. Consider what it takes to process food, and see how amazing God is.

If God can give man the power to process a wide range of food and drink, He is able to do even much more than just taste. One thing that is made clear from the process of taste is that there would be preparation. If you want to enjoy the food, you have to make sure that the ingredients are right, and the food is prepared the right way. No food turns out right automatically; you plan what you want to prepare, you go buy/make it, then spend time putting everything together in the right proportion and quantity. In the same way, you have to spend time preparing for the God who invites us to spend time with Him. This must not be a rushed job, where you are eager to throw things together and hope they come out right. When you consider the value of what food does to the body, you know it cannot be junk. In the same way, when you know the value of God to your eternal life, you know He is not to be toyed with or treated with levity.

David the psalmist here invites us to taste and see that the Lord is good. He would know who this God is, as he had several personal encounters with Him. It is almost as if God is saying to us that He is available; prepared and ready for us to take as much of Him as we want, and as often as we want, with there being enough of Him to go around. You cannot get all of God at the same time down here on earth, and we have the whole of eternity to know more of Him. He does not force Himself on anyone, or go against the exercise of my freewill. He prepares the table for a feast, but I have to show up to enjoy all that is on offer. He is the One on offer. He is the Gift that keeps on giving. He is the One that no man on earth can ever get enough of. For all who take refuge in Him, they will see the value of trust and be able to testify that indeed, God is good. Would you also trust Him this way? God's time of favour is here.
