Philippians 2:5 AMP
[5] Have this same attitude in yourselves which was in Christ Jesus [look to Him as your example in selfless humility],
Paul, writing to the church in Philippi, started this chapter with a reminder of the blessing and joy of shared faith. This was a church with people described as saints, God's people in Christ Jesus. That location is critical: it is not first about race or gender, but about the faith that we share. It is not about colour of skin, but the common denominator of total confidence in the ability of Jesus to save, and the follow-up commitment to put our trust in Him. It is not enough to just believe; you also have to act on that belief and commit your life and heart into His keeping. That trust is the key to access all that Jesus represents, and all that His death and resurrection have secured for us. He has shown us the perfect template of the value of sacrifice and humility can achieve.
His example then has become our inspiration today. Recall several times when Jesus put aside His glory and power, and acted like a servant. Recall the time He set aside His robe and washed the disciples' feet. Recall the time He challenged His disciples not to see themselves as great only by virtue of position or privilege, but by personal and humble service to other people. Too many times, we want to be recognised and celebrated; we seek relevance by publicity, not because we are invested in people, but because we think that our value is driven by applause or human approval. The life of Jesus makes it clear that the standard is not what people say, but what reflects the heart of Jesus. Do not be distracted by the comments or attitude of men like yourself; men are liable to change their minds whenever they want.
The standard is Jesus. Look to Him and the many examples of humility and service that He has laid out. Study His life and the many interactions He had with the disciples, as well as sworn enemies like the Pharisees, Sadducees and teachers of the law. Even when He disagreed with their ways, means and methods, He had some of them as His friends, seeking to help them into the kingdom of God. As long as salvation was at stake, Jesus was invested. That must be the same with us: if I know Jesus, it has to show in my life's pursuits and priorities. I must decrease so He can increase. In fact, the more of Him that is evident in me, the more men will be drawn to Him. I ask God for grace to reflect Christ in all that I do, so that in and by me, His power can be made manifest. God's time of favour is here.
