Jesus saith unto him, I am the way, the truth, and the life: no man cometh unto the Father, but by me. John 14:6 KJV
The Context and Charge:
Some statements are not worth much, particularly when you consider the caliber and character of the person who made them. There are also some statements that are eternal in their outlook, direction and impact, and today's extract is one of such statements. How do we confirm this? By looking at other statements made by the same person. Have they also come to pass? Is there any consistency to the principles, policies and processes behind those statements? We have the whole of the Bible, as well as our daily lives, to prove the quality, depth and truth behind whatever it is that Jesus says.
I cannot take some parts of Jesus' words as true, and reject other parts. If I accept Jesus is Saviour and Lord, I cannot pick and choose what is comfortable and convenient; the full gospel of Jesus is the good news of his birth, death and resurrection, which form the basis of our faith and hope. I must accept the complete package as presented by God, who himself testified publicly at the baptism of Jesus that He was his beloved son in whom He is well pleased. If this is the Son that God backs up and recommends to the world, then I will do well to listen to what He says and align my life accordingly.
The Contention and Conclusion:
He says He is THE, which means that even in the face of many options, he is the only genuine version. Men had stood up in the past to lay claim to deity or supernatural powers, but death has always been the defining factor for such claims. The created can NEVER assume the powers of the Creator. If Jesus, by and for whom all things were made, declares who He is, I must sit up and take notice. What he says about Himself is also specific, targeted and eternal: WAY, TRUTH, LIFE. He is the channel, content, constitution, connection and the conclusion of all life.
If I want to find God, I must come through Jesus, because He is the WAY. When I have found Him, I need His Word as the TRUTH to guide and guard me as I work and walk. As I work and walk, I am headed into LIFE eternal with God, which is the end of all labour on earth. There is no part I can leave out; otherwise it would not be the full gospel of Christ. I cannot forge my own path or choose a path that is convenient; Jesus has laid down the path and process, and if I will discover, pursue and fulfill His purpose for me, He is all I need. Nothing and no one else will work. God's time of favour is here.
