The Same!

The Same

Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Hebrews 13:8 NIV

Context and Charge:
Once again, we read a verse that is steeped in personal experience. It takes someone with some firsthand experience of the consistency and faithfulness of God to be able to state, without equivocation, that Jesus is the same for as long as memory serves. It would mean that this person, who has no knowledge of what had happened in the past, or what would happen in the future, is still able to state very clearly, that Jesus can be counted on and trusted, no matter the generation or the dispensation. What would give limited man that kind of limitless confidence? What would mortal man have to see or know in order to hold on to this truth about Jesus, even though he has not seen this Jesus in the physical? That is something called faith, and it cannot be explained by semantics or grammatical construction. It is the product of a personal walk with God.

The men who wrote these words were not moved or distracted by their physical experiences, because they knew the God they served and followed is powerful. They had seen kingdoms rise and fall; I imagine how Daniel would have come to fear God more when he saw how he dealt with Nebuchadnezzar. I imagine how anyone would have felt, seeing a servant of Jesus, Stephen, stoned to death, yet one of his arch-enemies, Paul, being saved by the same Jesus. There's nothing about this Jesus that follows science of rationale; he is the same one who broke protocol to allow a virgin conceive and bear a son, yet He has established times and seasons never to change until He returns. That is strength, power, wisdom and so many other great attributes all rolled into one person. Have you truly met this same Jesus? Have I?

Conviction and Conclusion:
In this one verse, we can draw a few conclusions, some of which are that this verse holds encouragement, as well as a note of warning for all who read it. It is an encouragement for all who need assurance that their experiences will make sense. Maybe there is some ongoing trouble, or maybe some new trouble is brewing, or you just sense that something unpredictable is around the corner, you have the sure Word of God as an anchor for your soul. This is the same God delivered Daniel from the lions' den as well as saved Peter from prison and certain death at the time. This verse is also a warning to all who may be tempted by compromise or surrender. If indeed Jesus is the same, no matter the generation, I must know that his view of and punishment for sin has not changed. If He promises mercy, my life must align with the conditions. His mercy and faithfulness guarantee that, as long as I hold on to Him, I cannot be disgraced or ashamed. God's time of favour is here.
