Psalm 78:5-8 AMP:
For He established a testimony (an express precept) in Jacob and appointed a law in Israel, commanding our fathers that they should make [the great facts of God’s dealings with Israel] known to their children, That the generation to come might know them, that the children still to be born might arise and recount them to their children, That they might set their hope in God and not forget the works of God, but might keep His commandments And might not be as their fathers--a stubborn and rebellious generation, a generation that set not their hearts aright nor prepared their hearts to know God, and whose spirits were not steadfast and faithful to God.
Another fairly long one, but one with an instruction and a warning that we will do well to heed and not ignore. If there's anything that has become the norm these days, it is the culture of silence around us. We have come to accept everything that comes our way, saying nothing, accepting everything, resisting nothing and challenging nothing. Evil thrives and 'good' people shrug and move on, evil feeds and the 'good' go hungry and silent, accepting the fact that maybe it was meant to be. We have insured our hearts against being affected by the ills of society, throwing our hands up in despair at the challenges facing us, overwhelmed by the weight attached to fighting for what we believe is right.
But as I read this, I perceive that God is pushing for a change of attitude. Silence is no longer golden when it comes to passing down the legacies and dealings of God from one generation to another. God demanded from the people of Israel to keep on talking about God's dealings to their children and to the generations coming so that there would never be a generation which did not know God or have time for him.
The realities of our present times attest to how far we have wandered, how deep we have sunk into a rut and how unsure we have become in our relationship with God. We do not talk anymore about the great exploits of God; politics, fashion, trends and society, even religious views have taken up space both in our consciousness and in our subconscious mind, as both the print and electronic media celebrate both the bad and the bizzare. Just raise an issue about Jesus and you could probably 'watch' the silence that ensues. It is a sensitive issue now and we claim we don't want to offend people's sensibilities. We forget that Jesus himself said he did not come to bring peace to the world but a sword. Any wonder then, why our world is the way it is: armed robbery, murder, corruption and evil seem to be the norm these days. We just accept it; we don't fight it. We don't say anything because we don't want to offend others. What we forget is that a generation may soon arise that may not know God or his commands.
We must keep speaking, keep spreading the Word, keep telling others about God too. Failure to do so will be the failed generation: without hope, without life, without God. The end-result of silence is seen in Judges 2:10 AMP:
And also all that generation were gathered to their fathers, and there arose another generation after them who did not know (recognize, understand) the Lord, or even the work which He had done for Israel.
May God help us.
