Know!
And you will know the truth [regarding salvation], and the truth will set you free [from the penalty of sin].” JOHN 8:32 AMP
Jesus speaks here. Here he was, caught in the middle of his disciples, the leaders of the people and a crowd. Even though man does not realize it, his greatest need isn't money, riches, connections, power, privilege or position, but liberty of the spirit. The world has made it appear that you are less than your best if you do not have some things, but Jesus' words reverberate all through the phases of human existence: your greatest need is ME.
It is not enough to hear the truth or simply acknowledge its existence; you have to come to a deep and experiential knowledge of that truth. It is what you know that you can draw out of when the need arises. No matter how much I know, or who I know, or how much I acquire, when the question of eternity demands a response from you, nothing about what you hold or have will be sufficient. The only thing that will have eternal value is Who you hold on to as the standard for your life.
There is an assurance that if I know the truth, then only am I truly free. How does this work? If you care to know, sin always leads to bondage. It does not matter what you may have been told, or how well dressed sin may have been presented to you: as long as this human existence is concerned, all who are born of woman are under the influence and power of sin. Nothing in us could save us, except the power of truth. That truth finds expression in the One speaking here - Jesus himself. Only in and through Him do I find what I need to live the life God has formed me to live. Only in and through Him am I truly set free.
The offer stands only on this side of eternity; once the fatal line is passed, the power of decision is taken away. Whilst I have the time, opportunity and power to decide, I better choose right. Eternity is waiting at the end of that decision. His time of favour is here.
