For the mountains shall depart, and the hills be removed; but my kindness shall not depart from thee, neither shall the covenant of my peace be removed, saith the Lord that hath mercy on thee. Isaiah 54:10 KJV
When the word SHALL is used, you watch out for compulsory action; not maybes or uncertainty. It means whatever it speaks about will surely happen. And if you read the context of today's extract and critically review recent world events, you will admit that God's Word can never be broken.
God was promising that just as in the days of Noah when he promised no more flood to destroy the earth, so was He promising here again that He would not take his kindness away from His people. That is a big promise, in light of the constant rebellion of the people of Israel to God's commands.
However, this is the nature of God's promise: if we were to deserve it, it would not make a difference. If we were to earn it by good works, it would not be mercy. We did nothing to deserve it, and this makes the gift even more special, considering that God would rather change the course of history and nature than change his mind towards me.
Mountains and hills were put in place by God, yet God is saying that for all who trust Him, He can move those things or turn them to dust if He needs to prove to us that His mercy and covenant CANNOT be broken. I take a look at my life, and consider all that has happened; I cannot find a single place where I can match what I have received with the effort I put in. God has consistently showed that He does not forget His children, even when they stray. His love and mercy just cannot let go.
And on that note, the warning is clear: if God could deal with the works of his hands this way, should that not be a warning to us not to reject Him? If He would change the course of history and nature for those He loves, imagine the fate of those who hate Him to the end of their lives. While you still have life, take a good look at yourself; who is in charge of your life? If God were to come calling now, demanding an account, what would it be? His love is eternal by His nature, but my response to this love has to be made on this side of eternity. His time of favour is here.
