Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. James 4:7 KJV
The Inspiration:
The word 'submit' is defined as 'to accept or yield to a superior force or to the authority or will of another person'. This would mean that it is either by freewill acceptance or a forceful yielding to a superior person. It is better if it is of my own freewill, where I recognize and accept the power and influence of the One I am to submit to. If it is of my own freewill, I know what I am getting into, and since we are speaking about God here, you are sure that there are eternal consequences to also consider. I am asked to submit of my own freewill, so I can enjoy the benefits that are also listed in the verse before us. It is also important to note that the way God formed man was to have dominion over all that God had created. Sin came and messed up the original template, but God knew how to restore us back to Himself.
The Contention:
I must also remember that the authority to be submitted to is also laid out clearly. It must be God and nothing else. God does not share His glory or praise with idols, and when He places a demand on something, I am yet to find a man who can successfully resist Him. I come to God as I am, because I know that He is all I need and He has all that I am and have. When I have submitted to God, and His ways have become my delight, I wonder which devil will be able to stand in my way. Yes, he may try, but his efforts will be the final gasps of defeat, which will be confirmed when Jesus returns. As I wait on God and strive to please Him, i am able to walk in the grace that God makes available. I can resist the devil and his cohorts, and also defeat his schemes. These are a few of the benefits submission brings.
The Conclusion:
Whenever he devil fights, God gives me strategies to defeat him, but I also note: he does not stop. He will keep coming, hoping that one day, you will fall and fail God. How would God fight for me if He does not own and hold my heart? How would I know what to do and when to do it if God cannot reach me? It is foolishness to cry to God morning and evening, asking for what you know God will never do. He won't break His laws for me. If He lays out rules of engagement, it will be utter wisdom to seek out these rules and ask Him for help me navigate through all of life's issues. God's grace is sufficient and available to all, but I must rely on that grace to successfully navigate through all that life brings. Have I submitted? Have you? God's time of favour is here.
