Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. Matthew 5:3 KJV
There is a poverty of the mind as well as poverty of the spirit. Neither is a reflection of your earning power or your account balance, but both are usually deeper than what a surface review can reveal. Both also have solutions which are spiritual in nature. Today's extract addresses the poverty of the spirit and lays down the solutions as well as the benefits of the right application of the solution.
To enjoy the benefits stated here, you have got to admit your weakness or lack. For the benefits of the kingdom of God to be yours, you have to admit that you do not have it all figured out or in control of anything. You know and admit that there is always room in your life for more than you have now and only the true Word of God, who is Jesus, can fill it. That is the state of a man that can receive divine help. If I am full, there is no room for more. If I admit I am empty, I open myself to more of God.
Why are the poor in spirit blessed? It is because they come to God with a heart that is hungry for all God is. They know He is the answer to all of their life's questions, and they will stay with Him, no matter how bad things get or whatever happens. They know they have nowhere else to go, and nobody else to help. If God would not help, then they would rather die than compromise or seek help from wrong sources. Do I have that same attitude? Can God count on my total and absolute commitment, or do I have 'viable' options, just in case God fails or does not show up when required?
The kingdom of heaven is the eventual benefit of all who stay true to God. Even before its physical manifestation, they have already secured a place in the kingdom while on earth. How does that work: with God, His eyes are always on the eternal. He has already finished His work, and all He does is use lives that are totally committed to Him. The kingdom of heaven is where the will of God reigns supreme, with no dissenting voice or contrary opinion. As I live from day to day, can I say of a truth that God's will is my daily desire and pursuit? Can I say of a truth that my life and heart are open to His control and influence? Fundamental questions, with answers that will impact eternity. His time of favour is here.
