Proof!

Proof!

A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another. John 13:34‭-‬35 KJV

Just before Jesus went the way of the cross, Today's extract details the events at the washing of the disciples' feet, where Jesus had just taught them the importance of humility in service. Judas had just been identified by Jesus as the one who would betray Him, but the other disciples didn't understand it then. Judas stepped out to go do his own thing, and Jesus used that opportunity to lay down new standards of engagement for all who profess to follow Him.

The old testament contains commands on love, but there was no supply of inner strength to comply. The law made a rule, but could not supply the inner convictions required to put them into practice. But here, the one who supplies grace was laying down the new law: the law of love, complete with the supply of the requisite grace to comply. Before now, the law had no viable example to present; it was just rules and regulations. Now, there was a practical example, one who was about to redefine love and present us with a standard that woud require grace to attain and sustain.

His love is the perfect example of what God demands: love without pretence; love without conditions at the time it is given. We didn't work hard to earn it, and we could do nothing to uphold or sustain it. We only became aware of it when it was shown to us, despite our sins. However, please note: this love that has been shown us will demand something from us. This love demands that we open our hearts to Him, allow him work in us, and then flow out through us. We have been shown love; the right response is to show it to other people.

Even though we didn't earn it, we have got to show it since we have received it. That outward flow is the proof of our allegiance. The world has seen enough examples of hate, bigotry and wars. It is time for the sons of God to be made manifest, and the sure way is the way of love. Men can read books or listen to sermons, but what louder message can a life proclaim, than one which is a living, breathing example of the love that the world cannot ignore.

Grace has been supplied; strength is made available. The command has been given, and God awaits willing vessels through which He may flow and impact the world. Will I be one He can trust? Am I available? Are you? His time of favour is here.
