Romans 10:14 NIV
[14] How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?
The message of salvation is for all men, Jew and Gentile alike. The gospel of Christ makes no distinction between the good or the bad, because grace does not discriminate. In fact, being good or bad does not count when it comes to grace, because grace proceeds on the position that ALL have sinned and come short of the glory of God. Grace is offered full and free to all men, and all who come to the source of grace take hold of all they need. Labour and striving and effort do not count here, because this is not the kind of thing that one can earn by academic qualifications or by personal effort. We come by faith in the work of Jesus done on the cross.
If one has to come to the cross by faith, there is a work that must be done to draw such a person near. This is where the verse above applies. How can anyone come to the cross if there is no knowledge of the benefits and blessings that are available at the cross? How do you attract a sinner to the cross if the message about Christ is not made visible and audible? The promise by God is that all who call on the name of the Lord will be saved, and this means that the need to call on that name must be emphasized. I will not call if I do not know how, and I will not call if I do not know the benefits that accrue from calling. This is an instance where what or who you do not know can really hurt you.
At the heart of this call is a life that makes calling on God attractive. This is why the assignment of making Christ known is first personal, before it can be corporate. I make Christ known in my own corner; you make Him known in yours, and as we all do it, the knowledge and aroma of Christ is spread all over the world, and men are attracted to the light of the gospel of Christ. Can the message of Christ be committed into my hands? The questions in the verse above are for my own personal reflection, and must lead me to make a choice: do I want to be a vessel by which the message of salvation is made known to all men? Can God count on me? God's time of favour is here.
