Power of Words

'Death and life are in the power of the tongue: and they that love it shall eat the fruit thereof'. Proverbs 18:21 KJV

The tongue is probably one of the most physically insignificant parts of the body but also one of the most crucial in the fulfilment of destinies. A greater part of who we are and what we become in life is largely dependent on the tongue. Lives have been built up and torn down due to the use of the tongue and the exercise of what the modern world calls 'free speech'.

It is fundamental to our understanding of this fact if we remember that God created all that we see now by the exercise of the tongue. He spoke and the earth came to be. He calls himself the Word and he exists as the written Word, the spoken Word and the Word that became flesh. Whatever it is that has been created exists through the Word of God and any repair, restoration, renewal or revival that we seek in any part of our lives can only come about through the Word of God. If God can so cherish his Word, imagine  the power that he has bestowed on us whom he has created and empowered with his nature. He has endowed us with the power to do all he can do. That's great responsibility and calls for a need to watch closely how we exercise that privilege. We are the total of the words we speak, the words we hear and the words we act upon. If God can say in Proverbs that we must not curse a deaf man who can't hear your words, then what you say affects you much more than the person you are speaking to.

Remember Caleb and Joshua? Their words guaranteed them entry into the promised land. Remember Rahab? Her words saved her entire generation. Remember when Israel went to spy Canaan and the words the 10 spies said? Remember what James says in James 3: 'the tongue is a fire'? That is the power of words. We have a choice today: to build up with our words or to tear down with our words? Check out your controlling influence; whoever or whatever controls you will influence the words you speak and the fruit your life and words will bear. God's season of favour is here.
