"That ye be not slothful, but followers of them who through faith and patience inherit the promises". Hebrews 6:12 KJV
I have not seen a single promise of God without any condition; any promise that says that no matter what you do, the promise will operate over your life needs to be re-examined. Even the promise of salvation and eternal life are for those who choose to accept Christ's finished work and believe in the efficacy of the blood.
The Bible is full of both sides of the faith and works argument. Abraham had a promise of unquantifiable blessings, yet we know how hard he worked to get the timing, location and heritage right. He didn't leave anything to chance by assuming that since God had promised, he didn't have to do anything else. He worked hard.
Yet, we see the children of Israel, armed with the promise of a better land, thinking that since the promise was made by God, he was bound to honour it no matter what they did. And we know the end-result- those who heard the promise didn't enter the promised land, not even Moses. It was their children, who didn't even know anything about what God had promised, except for Joshua and Caleb, who made it in.
Faith doesn't preclude hard work. Hard work is in fact, proof that you believe the promise. Folding of arms, assuming that the promise will come to pass with no input from you, is sheer laziness. With 0% effort, God's 100% blessing gets no results. Faith without works is dead.
Get the promise and believe it, then work hard at it to ensure its fulfilment. Without faith, it is impossible to please God. His time of favour is here.
