Let nothing be done through strife or vainglory; but in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves. Look not every man on his own things, but every man also on the things of others. Philippians 2:3-4 KJV
All actions, thoughts and words must be done/spoken out of a right heart. It does not matter how you convince yourself that what you do is right; it does matter how God interprets what you have done. When you are dealing with the creator of the heart, you have got to stop the deception and own up to your weakness, so you can receive strength.
It takes a broken heart to esteem others better than oneself. It takes a heart that has drunk deeply from God's well of grace to extend the same grace to other people. What you have not tasted or felt, you can't explain it to others. In a world that seems to be on a constant race towards something, it is hard to imagine someone placing other people's interests over and above your own. The world rewards coming first, but the world does not define what coming first means, or how to get to the right destination the right way.
I have my own needs, got a family to take care of, got a business to run, got fees and bills to pay; these are a few personal things. Do I then leave these and focus on other people? I believe today's extract strikes the right balance. It encourages me that as I look to my own things, I must ALSO look to the things of others. As I seek to provide for my family, I must see ministry opportunity through what God has given me. As l work daily to make ends meet, I must be conscious that what I have is a privilege, and I must be ready to share with others, in obedience to God's Word.
When the heart is right, it sees possessions as channels of grace. When the heart is right, it sees people are God's greatest investments. More than physical possessions, personal needs and emotional demands, God expects me to be his hand, eye and heart to a world in need of his grace. Can he count on me? His time of favour is here.
