The ear that listens to and learns from the life-giving rebuke (reprimand, censure) Will remain among the wise. He who neglects and ignores instruction and discipline despises himself, But he who learns from rebuke acquires understanding [and grows in wisdom].
PROVERBS 15:31-32 AMP
All around us, we see examples of lives that have learnt from discipline, and obvious cases of those who have also ignored counsel and instruction. The fruits of our lives cannot be ignored, and all we are today reflects all we have listened to and imbibed. Whatever you may be looking for - good or bad - you will find answers. Everywhere you turn, you find words of counsel and instruction, as well as a critical mass of wrong doctrine and heresies.
It then falls on me to sort through the whole mess and discover truth for myself. There is a truth that no situation or circumstance can deny, and that truth is tied to God. True wisdom cannot be accessed anywhere else except in God. God also disciplines those who he calls his children, while those who reject counsel and discipline are already making a decision on their priorities and eternity.
So, what are my pursuits? Can God catch my attention long enough so I can listen to what he has to say? Do I pause long enough at the start of a new day to receive instruction for that day? Do I take my time to glean from the treasures of truth daily, so I can be properly guided and directed in my daily living? God is always speaking, directing, guiding, leading, strengthening, correcting, training and teaching. Am I listening?
There are eternal consequences for either side of the decision. God has made his purpose clear, and has also informed us about the eternal destination choices for all men. I have a choice, and it is to listen to God and what he has to say. His time of favour is here.
