Willingly!.
When Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, “It is finished!” And He bowed His head and [voluntarily] gave up His spirit. JOHN 19:30 AMP
What does this season represent? What does the death of Jesus signify? What do I stand to gain from the events of Calvary? Everything that happened on that day had significance for my eternity. First, it was the drink He was given. He had been battered and bruised, and He asked for a drink. Even at the point of death, He couldn't even get a proper drink. Think about it: the people he asked a drink for were the ones He was suffering for, yet nobody cared. Consider the price He paid so I could lay my hands on the prize.
Secondly, he said: "It is finished". Whatever it was that sin started, Jesus' sacrifice on the cross finished it. Whatever was the plan of God for the eternal redemption of man, Jesus had just completed and perfected it. All of God's great mercy, grace, favour and love found expression at that point; where the price was now fully paid, and man could walk away from the consequences of his evil actions. Lest you think it was for fun, think of this: If God considered sin so great that such a high price had to be paid for it to be fully dealt with, I cannot view sin any less.
Lastly, He gave up His life Himself; nobody could force Him to. This was a willing sacrifice, and through it, I am called to willingly surrender my own life to Him. If He gave his life as his best, the best I can do is to give him my life in return. Remember, all men will give account of this life decision: what I have done with the free gift of God- Jesus Christ himself. His time of favour is here.
