But let judgment run down as waters, and righteousness as a mighty stream. Amos 5:24 KJV
As you read the context of today's extract, you get the clear impression that one of the gravest dangers of our generation today is the abundance of activities, but a dearth of true heart commitment. The people of Israel were faithful to the commands of God with regard to offering sacrifices; in fact, there were about 3 annual major feasts, complete with offerings. The people kept the feasts alive but over time, the hearts behind those sacrifices had wandered far away from the purpose behind those offerings.
As I read these words, I am reminded again that the things God looks for aren't so much on the outside but on the inside. Men have learnt how to pretend and keep up appearances; we have mastered the art of deception, thinking that we can treat God the way we treat other men. But the God who laid down the law of sacrifices makes it clear that the heart with which you offer the sacrifices is even more important than the quantity and quality of the offerings you offer. Ask Cain and Abel. As long as the heart of Cain wasn't right, it didn't matter what else he did.
God's prescription for acceptable sacrifices starts with a heart that is totally submitted to God. The heart allows God be all He can be. That life allows God to flow through it, so that men can see God flow out and change people and things. Justice is God's nature; righteousness is God's nature. If my life will make impact, these things must be a part of my daily life. They must flow out and abound; it cannot be an occasional outburst once in a while. These things cannot be subject to how I feel, but a daily connection to God must be seen in my daily interaction with other people.
If I am truly a child of God, his nature and power must flow out of me. If indeed I am His, who He is must be made manifest in and through me. The world is waiting to see the difference my life can make. Is my life flowing with the right ingredients? His time of favour is here.
