Genesis 18:17-19 NIV:
Then the Lord said, “Shall I hide from Abraham what I am about to do? Abraham will surely become a great and powerful nation, and all nations on earth will be blessed through him. For I have chosen him, so that he will direct his children and his household after him to keep the way of the Lord by doing what is right and just, so that the Lord will bring about for Abraham what he has promised him.”
Passages like these make you wonder and marvel at the person and nature of God. We see him as the Almighty God, the One who can do mighty things and exploits. He calls and proves himself as the Mighty One in battle, yet he sits down with mortal man to discuss life issues. He's the One who holds the entire heavens and the earth, yet he holds in his everlasting arms the small man who needs comfort and grace. He's mighty, yet he's meek; he's awesome, yet he's approachable; his power cannot be obstructed yet his love too is limitless.
The verses here describe a peculiar scene: God is consulting his creation before he carries out any assignment or task on earth. It is almost as if God is saying: "I have given you the whole earth to have dominion over it so if you walk with me, I will consult you even before I do anything on the earth". That is an amazing thought. To imagine that the unquestionable God will stoop low to consult me, mere dust, before he does anything with his own handiwork, should make me humble, careful and diligent in my relationship with this God.
God could boast about Abraham that he would teach his children to fear the Lord. God could entrust secrets and plans into the hands of Abraham because Abraham was careful to nurture and nourish his relationship with God. He was called the friend of God.
The same God is seeking true worshippers still. He's looking for people he can entrust secrets to; people who will stand with Him, no matter their challenges and struggles, seeking to entrench the rule of God in their world.
An apt verse to end this is this: 2 Chronicles 16:9a NIV:
For the eyes of the Lord range throughout the earth to strengthen those whose hearts are fully committed to him.”
God is still searching, are you available for use? Make yourself available, for his season of favour is here.
