Knowing!
Therefore to him that knoweth to do good, and doeth it not, to him it is sin. James 4:17 KJV
Today's extract is a direct and very personal message to all who read this: To him who knoweth to do good.... which means that it has been given to every man to know what is right and wrong. The breath of God in a man is a measure of God in him, reminding him of his ownership and allegiance. Like all things human, I can decide to ignore reject the warnings given.
This isn't first about being a Christian, though it definitely makes a difference, but for all persons alive, there is a witness in the Bible where Romans 20 CEB says that: Ever since the creation of the world, God’s invisible qualities—God’s eternal power and divine nature—have been clearly seen, because they are understood through the things God has made. So humans are without excuse.
If God has deemed it fit to show us His power and nature, through the things He has made, and He has also given us an inner witness that reminds us that there is a God in charge of the affairs of men, if I then choose to ignore his Word and warnings, I cannot turn around and blame God for the consequences of my choice. If I have been told what is right and wrong, and I choose what is wrong, God defines that as sin.
I cannot measure my own standing with God by another person's life; I cannot walk with God through the lens of another man's experience. It is first a personal walk and a personal race, long before it becomes a fellowship of believers. God is able to deal with sin, and one way He does that is by His Spirit continuously speaking and reminding us of His will. Will I listen and respond accordingly? Will you? His time of favour is here.
