Right Thoughts!

Right Thoughts!

Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things. Philippians 4:8 KJV

When you read the word 'Finally', you need to pay attention to the things that have gone before. Paul had taken time to focus on the state and contents of the heart, and was emphasising the need to watch out for the things I focus on. The contents of my heart are so important to God that so many verses in the Bible warn about what I allow into it. For example, Paul warns against worry and doubt, and underlines the importance of taking everything to God in prayer. When I know there is a God who is interested in every aspect of my life, it takes away fear and uncertainty from my heart.

Today's extract focuses on the contents my heart must have if it is to thrive. The picture that seems to be emphasized here is this: I have control over what I allow in. I'm not helpless in the face of the onslaught going on. The devil will throw all he can my way: pornography is on the increase; sin is being presented as fashionable; rebellion is introduced as maturity and development. There are a lot of things happening all at the same time, yet God is saying to me: you have the power to choose what goes in. You are the gatekeeper of your heart and mind.

And God prescribes the right materials for focus. Everything mentioned here is related to God's own nature: true, honest, just, pure and of good report. I have been given the power to determine what is right or wrong, and to act accordingly. If I choose right, I get the right outcomes. If I choose wrong, I also get the right outcomes in line with my choice. I cannot then turn around to blame anyone else for the consequences of my own decisions.

God has made it clear how everything ends. I have been given advance notice. I have been appropriately advised and all requisite information on eternity provided. The end of both choices is made clear; eternity awaits my decision. His time of favour is here.
