Romans 6:16-17 NIV:
Don’t you know that when you offer yourselves to someone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one you obey—whether you are slaves to sin, which leads to death, or to obedience, which leads to righteousness? But thanks be to God that, though you used to be slaves to sin, you have come to obey from your heart the pattern of teaching that has now claimed your allegiance.
It is said that nature abhors a vacuum. There's nothing like empty space or a blank mind. For every human being created in the likeness of God, the creative, nurturing power of God is deposited in that being. That is why we can witness the great advancements in transport, medicine, technology and all, pointing to the active creative nature of man. On the flip side however, we have also seen modern warfare and destruction being advanced by the same creative minds God has created, and the diverse instruments of war and death that we have managed to create. What is God saying then in the verses above? I believe that what we are seeing today is the exercise of the free will that has been given by God. God has created us in his likeness and has endowed us with all his attributes. As we exercise our free will in the matters of life and living, we must live with the consequences and effects of our decisions.
Ultimately, our decisions show who really is in charge of our lives: God or (d)evil. There's no middle ground, no sitting on the fence, no compromise. It is either God is calling the shots or he has vacated the premises.
Who have I offered myself to? Who's really in charge of my decision process? Who calls the shots in my life? Is it food, sleep, sexual immorality, position, power, possessions or is God fully consulted in every area of endeavour?
As the passage above says, whoever I offer or yield myself to becomes my master. It is an exercise of free will, I must yield myself to a master. There's a choice to be made, a course of life to determine and a destiny to decide. It all starts with the choices made today.
Who's in charge? Be sure it is God. His time of favour is here.
