Words and Grace

Colossians 4:6 NIV
Let your conversation be always full of grace, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how to answer everyone.

Words are powerful. They come in variants, sizes, content and context but they are one of the most powerful forces in the universe. The power of words is seen and best appreciated in the story of creation, where God brought the entire complex universe into being simply by speaking. Even after creating man from dust, he spoke his purpose into existence and man has been at that business till today- fill the earth, subdue it and have dominion.
No wonder then that the power of the words we speak are always emphasized. We have been encouraged to seek out words that create and build up and not words that tear down and destroy. Easier said than done until your rights are being trampled upon and denied. Your words then will matter- do I handle this with grace, while insisting on my rights or do I just strike out whichever way I feel is best, after all, it is my right thst is being denied?
God's word quoted above leaves no room for options. In whatever situation you find yourself, you are to respond with grace. A Christian who has been described as the salt of the earth has to sweeten and add flavour to the world around him. There's no room for selective influence, such that in some places, you act all nice and in some other plaaces, you 'claim your right', being nasty about it. Salt changes the environment it finds itself, always improving the situation. It does not seek its own best interests, it just seeks to improve the soup of life it has been added to.
What are my priorities? Do I seek my own interests? Do I even know how to answer criticisms, questions and peoples' prejudices against me? Or do I just react as I see fit, not caring the weight attached to my words?
Watch your words- they carry the potential of either life-giving or death-inducing possibilities. The choice is mine. His time of favour is here.
