Take No Thought!

Take No Thought!

Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof. Matthew 6:34 KJV

The Context:
This verse is part of the Sermon on the Mount, where Jesus spoke to his disciples about his father's expectations from all who will follow Him. The focus of the section from which today's extract is taken is on the place of God and possessions in my life. There is no amount of worry, anxiety or fretting that will automatically provide all that i need for life; I don't get all that is coming my way simply by fear. God knows all I need for life and Godliness, and His promise is that He will supply them. I only need to trust in, depend on and obey Him completely, and He will sort it all out. Or is there an alternative to trust in God? Do I really want to find out what the effect of self-help is?

The Charge:
There is enough trouble for each day God brings, without my adding to it. The pursuit of purpose is a daily thing, and just as God works to bring His will to pass, so does the devil work to frustrate God's will in our lives. God releases brand new mercies each day, but I must seek out those mercies and make them mine on a daily basis. I can't rely on what worked yesterday to process today's challenges; it is a daily walk, not a weekly, monthly or yearly appointment. You can't keep an eye on tomorrow while trying to sort out today's challenges. I must live in today, trust Him today and leave Him to sort out that which is tomorrow. After all, what can I do about a day I am yet to see?

The Conclusion:
It has to be repeated here that today's extract was addressed to Jesus' disciples then, and is still applicable to them today. It is the way of the people of the world to worry about what they can get for themselves out of the world. The world can take care of its own, but it cannot guarantee eternity with God because it does not have it. Each day answers to the dictates of the One who created it and assigned its priorities. My life is best Iived under the control and direction of that Creator. Plotting and thinking would change not a single thing. God's time of favour is here.
