Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; And lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, And he shall direct thy paths.
Proverbs 3:5-6 KJV
The Context and Charge:
These words seem to be attributed to Solomon, the wisest king of his time. He did not study at the feet of any great teacher, but He had the blessings of the God of wisdom. The book of proverbs is full of one-line messages, and today's extract is full of one-line messages. The first one deals with trust; you cannot trust someone you have not spent time knowing and learning about His ways and acts. You do not arrive there by accident, but by careful, daily and consistent learning.
If I am charged to trust God with all my heart, it is not enough to go halfway and stop. I deny myself the earthly and eternal benefits of trust when my whole heart is not committed to it. It has to be the whole thing, or nothing at all. I cannot lean on my own understanding because I am limited in all aspects of life. I do not have the faintest idea of what the next second brings, so I need the help of the One who formed time and controls all of it. He wants to help, but I must let Him. I cannot be in charge of my life, expecting God to stamp my own ideas; it has to be Him running the show.
The Conclusion and Comfort:
I have the assurance that if I let Him, He will not let go. If I acknowledge Him in all ways, I will be directed and led aright in all ways. I note that the word ALL is used quite extensively in today's extract, which again shows that God does not do half measures. Check out all the men and women of the bible and you will see the effect of total or partial commitment to God. If I want to see all of God's grace, I must leave all the confidence in man-made schemes. They have always failed, and no matter the lies the devil will have us believe, they will continue to fail. Trust in God; the benefits are eternal. God's time of favour is here.
