The Great God!

The Great God!

Wherefore thou art great, O LORD God: for there is none like thee, neither is there any God beside thee, according to all that we have heard with our ears. 2 Samuel 7:22 KJV

The Context:
David had been a fighting man for most of his life. At this point, the Bible records that God had now given him rest on all sides. For most men, that is the time to be selfish, thinking of how to satisfy the desires of the flesh and live for pleasure only. Not David; there is a reason why he is called 'a man after God's heart'. Rest on all sides for David meant he could now think of ways to serve God more, in this case, build a befitting house for God. The thought is really important: what fills my heart? What are the things that take up my waking thoughts? God loves David's thoughts, and even though God would not permit David to build a house, he promised that David's son would, and as we know, it happened exactly as God had promised. With God, there is a certainty about His promises. If He says it, be sure He can do it. Until He speaks, men are free to speak as they please; As soon as God speaks, it does not matter what any man has to say.

The Charge:
The words of today's extract are an appreciation of God's promise to David. David was promised an eternal kingship, which, of course, had both physical and spiritual application. Till all of Judah was taken into exile, Judah was always ruled by direct descendants of David. Even in the spiritual, the soon coming king, Jesus, is also from the lineage of David. Again, God does not need my help to be God; He is capable of being all He is by Himself. Today's extract is about God and more - his identity, power, uniqueness, faithfulness, consistency and testimony. It takes personal experience to write these words; how do you know a great God if you have never met one, or seen one at work? If all I know about this God is what other people  say, it is such a poor level of knowledge. I need that personal touch in order to say, like David here, that I know this great God, the one who cannot be compared with anyone or anything else. Have you met this God?

The Conclusion:
David has made this God known, based on his own experience and encounter with Him. Do I have any such personal dealings with this God? The God who knows our hearts and cannot be deceived by outward platitudes and empty words. He is not like mortal men, dishing out favours only to those he knows or likes. There is no basis of comparison because He is a God who does what is unusual, unpredictable and miraculous. Yes, there are gods, but there is only one God. He desires to show himself strong in the lives of all who trust Him. When I hear other people's testimonies about God, I am encouraged because He is the same yesterday, today and forever. No demand on earth can exhaust the resources of heaven. I will also share my own experience of God, so that other people can also be encouraged to seek and know God. The experience will be worth it, for all of life and eternity. God's time of favour is here.
