The Right Life

because through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.

Indeed, there are always two laws at work in every life: the law of the Spirit who gives life and the law that awoke sin in us and leads to death. No matter the level of maturity, there's a need to watch out for both laws as their operations in any life goes a long way in determining the final destination of that life. Today's extract has already done the hard work for us by stating clearly the end-result of both laws. One is the law of sin. It reminds us of our fallen human nature, the one that was picked up in the garden of Eden, and which all men are subject to at birth. This law is the one the world without Christ lives by and it is the law that will pronounce the sentence of death to ALL who are under it, because there's nobody alive who can fulfil ALL the requirements of this law. Even the Bible says that if a man obeys all the law, yet fails in one, he's guilty of failing all the commandments. That's frightening. It then means that no matter how hard I try, I can't make it on my own. No amount of resolutions or decisions can help me keep the law. Its operation thrives on sin, and its end is death.

But there's another law, the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus. This is the law prescribed by God to save us and guarantee eternal life. Its peculiarities include the fact that nothing you do makes you qualified to enjoy the benefits of this law because all that was required had been done by the one who laid down the law. He saw our helpless state and decided to help us. He gave his life so He could meet the demands of the law of sin which required that blood be shed for sins. He died so that all who believe in his finished work can come under a new law, one that speaks of true life- both here and in the life to come.

A very pertinent question then: what law guides you? Under which authority is your life operating presently? Have you passed from death to life? Are you still under the bondage and direction of the law that has no life to give or are you under the law that is Life itself? What you do now and how you live now is the greatest testament to the law that you have submitted to. Get Christ, get true life. His time of favour is here.
