The Greatest Gift 6
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God, and saying, Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace, good will toward men. Luke 2:13-14 KJV
The birth of the Saviour of the world had just been announced, and so many things about this birth was not just normal. First, the King of kings wasn't born in a palace fit for a king, but in a place fit and proper for animals - a feeding trough and manger. Secondly, no one had any idea if this King of kings deserved a palace announcement, with a declaration of him being heir to the throne; no one in Herod's palace knew anything about Him, while Herod himself was bent on silencing any opposition to his rule and reign.
Thirdly, men went about their usual and regular life, not knowing that the course of history had just changed, and true life had just been introduced. God had come down in human form, relating at our level, and offering us a way back to God, but of course, because it didn't come with the usual fanfare that accompanies such things, it slipped under the radar. However, if man didn't know, the heavens were in no doubt as to the import of what had just happened. The whole heavens stood still in awe of what God had just done.
No wonder the whole heavens were opened, and a multitude of the heavenly host appeared, praising God. Well, this is the usual scenario in heaven, with unceasing praise offered to God by angels who know and understand the power of this God. Why would this event be brought before man down here on earth? Could it be it is because we had to know and understand what we have received? Could it be a testimony to the love, power and wisdom of God, made manifest in the gift of the Son being celebrated by heaven itself?
The birth of the Saviour has brought peace to man down here. Nothing I do with the gift down here changes anything about God, but if I receive the gift and believe in Him, I enjoy the peace that has been promised. If I reject Him, I cannot turn around and blame God for however my life ends. Choices are my bit; consequences follow. His time of favour is here.
