Above All!
Above all, be careful what you think because your thoughts control your life.
Proverbs 4:23 ERV
With God, there are priorities. In walking with God, there are some things he considers to be very important. Two days ago, we spoke about the human heart and its deception and deceit and the fact that God would have to work on it for its offering and sacrifices to be acceptable before God. And that point is only further emphasized by today's extract, where it charges me to take care about what goes into my heart. The natural tendency for the human heart is towards evil, due to our fallen nature. Sin is attractive; we crave it; we respond to it. Only when the heart is totally given to God can it be free of the power and control of sin.
Why do I need to be careful of what goes into my heart? Today's extract gives the answer, which is that what goes in always determines what comes out, as well as the impact my life will have on the world around me. If I do not consciously sieve what I allow into my heart, my life becomes a dumping ground for junk. I must take deliberate action about my processing centre- if it is not of eternal value and does not improve on my knowledge and understanding of God, then it has no place in my heart.
Above all means it must be my first and utmost priority. It is the door to a fruitful and result-oriented relationship with God. The thoughts of my life will eventually show off in the physical evidence of my life's choices and priorities. I wouldn't want to stand before God at the end of my life and discover that I had pursued the wrong things or expended energy on the wrong things. May I not live a purpose-less life, chasing after the things that considers minor, leaving out the things of eternal value. His time of favour is here.
