CV!
GOD IS our Refuge and Strength [mighty and impenetrable to temptation], a very present and well-proved help in trouble. Psalm 46:1 AMPC
Today's extract reads like a CV. This is about God. The easiest way to understand who this God is will be to define the key terms in today's extract. Refuge means a state or place of being safe or sheltered from pursuit, danger, or difficulty. Strength means the quality or state of being physically strong as well as the capacity of an object or substance to withstand great force or pressure.
A few things stand out here: whoever is spoken about here is more than just the usual; He is a person, an institution and the source of all that life needs. In God, we find a place where we are kept from pursuit, danger or difficulty. It does not mean they won't try; it means that in God, they would have to touch Him first before they get to us. You have got to run into Him to enjoy the protection on offer.
God as our strength reminds us that what God supplies is both physical and spiritual. He keeps us from physical harm as well as the arrows of the enemy. Whatever it is that comes at me must come through God, and if it hits me, its impact has been measured by God and found to be just appropriate for my development. You have got to be in Him to enjoy what flows out of Him.
He is also seen as a present help in trouble. At the very time you need Him, He shows up. It may appear that He is slow or late; but He is actually always on time: His time. We measure life by time; God measures our lives by His own purpose and will for our lives. And it is important to round off this piece by reminding us that the focus of this extract is not a theory, concept or physical material, such as high walls, adequate security measures or guards; it is God Himself.
If you don't have or know Him, how do you enjoy all He offers? He has told us who He is and what He can do; the decision to accept Him and enjoy all He offers is mine alone. What's it going to be? His time of favour is here.
