For the word of God is quick, and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the dividing asunder of soul and spirit, and of the joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12 KJV
There are words, and there is the Word. Men speak, and then God speaks. When you have heard both, you know which one to trust. There are powers, but there is one called the Omnipotent God, who can do all things and is not limited in any way by anything or anyone. That is the basis of today's extract: making the introduction of the God who speaks and every voice is silent and still.
Men's words may carry power, especially when there is authority and position backing them up, but it is also possible that even with all the authority and position, these men still have expiry dates. Men can make things happen, but they cannot guarantee how these things will end. Then you have a God whose Word also carries power, and the authority and position are also embedded in the Word. And because he is limitless and without end, there is no expiry date or limit to his Word.
The power in His Word is made manifest in so many ways. It is sharper than any two-edged sword, cutting even the hearer, speaker or the receiver of the Word. There is no stopping its effects, because it is not subject to my emotional manipulation. It is not first about my comfort, but about building my character. It is able to cut through the pretence, hypocrisy and the self-deception, and show me who I really am. It cuts so fine and so close that you will know, without a doubt, where you stand and who you are in Christ.
And it goes even deep into your thoughts, motives and intents. We can convince ourselves that we are right, but it is not enough. We can deceive ourselves into thinking we gave our all or our best, but before we go pumping our chests at our achievements, we had better check that God shares the same idea as ours. It will be most unfortunate to go through life thinking we were working for God, only to discover at the end of our lives that we were only promoting our own agendas.
We deal with a God of absolute knowledge. We deal with the creator of the heart, so nothing escapes his attention. He is the God of all flesh, and his power remains absolute and all-encompassing. How would you respond? His time of favour is here.
