For if anyone only listens to the word without obeying it, he is like a man who looks very carefully at his natural face in a mirror; for once he has looked at himself and gone away, he immediately forgets what he looked like. But he who looks carefully into the perfect law, the law of liberty, and faithfully abides by it, not having become a [careless] listener who forgets but an active doer [who obeys], he will be blessed and favored by God in what he does [in his life of obedience]. JAMES 1:23-25 AMP
The Word of God is always available. Everywhere you turn, you encounter Him. Oh yes, the Word of God is a living being, who is Life and of course gives life to all who turn to him. God encourages us all to approach him through the Word, and all who do so reap the benefits and blessings that the Word gives.
Why is it important to deal with the Word in this manner? The passage above provides answers. The first and the most important is that I have a choice of response. I can open my heart to the Word to do His work, or I can resist him. Both choices have consequences, as we always know, God always tells you ahead what the consequences of your actions and inactions are.
The Word is a mirror. It tells me exactly who I am and where I am headed. People will always have opinions about who I am, but the only opinion worth considering is the one provided by the Word. If He tells me I am headed in the wrong direction, it does not matter if the whole world applauds me. If I am headed in the right direction, it does not matter what the quantity and quality of the opposition against me is. In the final analysis, the question will always be: Who I am in the light of God's Word?
The choice is in the response. When you encounter the Word, you will always get a feedback. It could be a need for reproof, it could be correction, it could be validation, it could be emphasis on a Spiritual virtue; when He comes, and I receive Him with a correct heart, I receive God's blessings. If I decide to reject His truth, then I am like the man who forgets what he looks like as soon as he has left the mirror.
If there is anything wrong with the image you see in the mirror, you don't go breaking the mirror, or replacing it. You make the required changes. God does not lower his standards for anyone, and he has already clearly stated that he exalts his Word above all things. You can choose to be a careless listener who forgets, or you could be an active doer who obeys. Both are choices with consequences.
Don't forget: the foundation of ALL you will get in life is the Word. Your response to Him Now will determine his response to you. If you will make impact, if you will be a blessing, take the Word with you wherever you go. His time of favour is here.
