Priorities!

Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth. Colossians 3:2 KJV

Today's extract would not make sense if there was no danger of wrong priorities. If there was just one option, there would be no need to make a distinction between things above and things on earth. What today's extract shows is that having the clear vision of what is important is key to unlocking all that God has in store for me. Not to know can be fatal, as I could be busy and focused, but on the wrong things. I could be expecting a rich reward, yet get nothing at the end of the day, simply because I was focused on the wrong things.

SET shows a picture of absolute devotion and focus. When you set a thing in its place, it is fixed and firm. There are some things that once you have set them in place, like bricks on cement, it would take a storm or heavy wind to dislodge them. That's how God would have me set my affections on things above. What he wants me to set aren't just anything, but those things that hold my attention, my heart and my eyes. Whatever it is I prioritize becomes my affection. If it is not anything based on God, imagine the heart ache and the pain that lie ahead.

The reason why things above are important is because they are the only things that outlive this present earthly phase. No matter what you amass, they remain down here. There is NOTHING at all down here that will do you any good up there, except your faith in God. It is your faith in God that guarantees you eternal life with Him, and it is your faith in God that sustains you through the experiences that will come and the ones that have come now. Your good works may have value, but of what use are good works if they cannot secure eternal dwellings for me with God?

Please note: this is not a call to be so heavenly minded that you are totally earthly useless, but it is a call to be mindful of the important things. Like Mary and Martha, there is a right time to serve tables, and a right time to sit at the feet of Jesus and hear Him speak. Your life's impact depends on you understanding the right timing, and the place for everything God brings. So, where is your focus? Where is your heart? What holds your attention long enough that it can impact your eternity? Be sure it is what God also considers important. His time of favour is here.
