So teach us to number our days, that we may apply our hearts unto wisdom. Psalms 90:12 KJV
The world celebrates milestones and achievements; really nothing wrong with that. We measure age by the number of years we have lived; we celebrate birthdays, wedding anniversaries and other achievements. But then I come across today's extract, and I am forced again to examine my life from God's perspective and see what He wants me to do differently, if any.
It appears to me that God accepts our timelines but He does not respect them. We count in years, He counts in Time. We count in days, weeks and months, he just counts in time, whatever it is and no matter how 'long' it appears. There is a popular expression in the Bible that reads: 'And when the time had fully come'. What this tells me is that it does not really matter how well my plans have been laid; what matters is how my plans fit into God's perfect timing.
He is the One who has been at work since the creation of the earth. He placed all things in their proper places, and they continue to thrive where they have been placed. If non-living things and animals could submit to God's command, how much more we who are made in His likeness? It is this understanding that drives today's extract: I ask God to teach me to see things from his own perspective, not mine.
Too many times, we have measured ourselves in the light of other people's experiences and felt we were not adequate. We forget that our walk and race are unique to us. I ask God to teach me to see my life in the right way, which is to glorify God with all I am and have. I ask God to help me keep eternity before my eyes, so that its importance and consciousness will be my driving and guiding principle every day God gives me. If my days will be blessed, they must be lived in line with the perfect will of the One who gives it breath.
That is the path of wisdom: knowing God and submitting to His will. There is no other way; no other viable option. All other options lead to death. His time of favour is here.
