The Last Word!

The Last Word!

Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter: Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. Ecclesiastes 12:13 NIV

The pedigree of the one speaking or writing goes a long way to establish the authority of that person on whatever issue is discussed. The Art of War, written by Sun Tzu as far as the 5th Century BC and Animal Farm, written by Geroge Orwell and published in 1945, contain principles and political theory and science that have reigned true till this day. So, when a man the bible describes as one of the wisest people on earth, we should listen and take heed.

Solomon enjoyed his life. He had wealth beyond any man's wildest dreams, and men came from the ends of the earth to listen to him. He espoused principles and processes for life, and we still align with these till today. Yet, towards the end of his earthly life, he came to the conclusions in today's extract, and the summary is this: there is nothing to this earthly phase. It is a mirage; a mist that appears for a while and is gone. When you look at recent world events, don't you think that the world's systems, structures and technology are inadequate to deal with the fundamental question of life?

We acquire possessions so we can get power; we lobby for position and privilege, labouring under the false impression that these things will get us where we need to be or give us what we need. Unfortunately, the created things can never take the place of the Creator. Solomon had wealth, yet he knew something was missing. Today's extract provides that missing bit: the fear of God in all we do. You see, there is nothing wrong with the pursuit of power, position or influence, but it is best to do with the fear of God as the guiding light. In all my labour, I must never forget that nothing I acquire down here will go with me into eternity.

I must work hard, but also live smart. I must make alliances, but I must have the right allegiance. My whole life's duty is summed up in those words: "Fear God". When I have that fear, my pursuits and priorities are aligned with God's purpose for my life. I must live well and live right, which can only be truly done when God is the guiding light. When I fear God, his Word and commands become my daily interests. Obedience is first all that God requires of me; then networth can follow. Don't place network, networth or applause over and above obedience or the fear of God. Your eternal reality depends on the proper order. His time of favour is here.
