If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved. Romans 10:9-10 NIV
The question of eternity must be answered by all of us. It does not matter how long or short you live; one day, this phase called earth will come to an end and you will have to settle your eternal destination. There are a lot of suggestions and claims everywhere you turn, but form today's extract, there is a process established by God for man to be certain of his eternal destination.
First, your heart and your mouth can never be in discord. You may pretend for a while, say something and mean something else, but over a period of time, the truth about your motives and intentions will become apparent. That is why there can be no talk of the mouth without a corresponding comment of the heart. With God, you don't confess something with your mouth and mean something else in your heart. It is not an option; you are either all in with both, or not in at all.
Secondly, it does matter what you say and what you believe. Beyond just speaking, what are you saying? Your mouth has got to say the right words. You may be truly sorry about your past, and really wish to live differently, but Jesus has got to be Lord of your life if that life will make sense. Being morally upright, good in character or the best of people by the world's standards will not be sufficient. You must confess Jesus as Lord. That is the hardest thing to do: admit your helplessness and accept the free gift in faith. It works though.
Your heart also must believe that his death and life is the guarantee of your eternity. Your journey to eternity starts at the foot of the cross. Until you know, understand and accept that Life is only available in Christ, you have not begun the journey. Justification, sanctification and salvation are all available through Christ, not from good works or family connections.
So, where are you headed? What destination are you working towards? His time of favour is here.
