I look up to the mountains; does my strength come from mountains? No, my strength comes from God , who made heaven, and earth, and mountains. Psalm 121:1-2 MSG
Indeed, how and what you see determine what you get. There are many eyes that look and behold but not too many eyes see right. The world teaches us to look and observe and critically examine, but the world does not have any kind of insight into the things that really matter. The world teaches us to install the right gadgets, acquire the latest, learn the contemporary and know what is happening around you. This advice is very good, but beyond the acquisitions, what matters is the matter of the heart, not the eyes. It is the state of your heart and its pursuits that will determine what you become.
The Psalmist here must have considered the many options available. Some would have seen the high mountains and felt secure; the psalmist saw them, yet considered them inadequate for protection: a matter of the eyes that see. Others would have considered the mountains around Jerusalem as sufficient protection against enemies, but as we know, the city was attacked and conquered more than once. How do you see? What do you see? Do you trust in man-made devices and secure yourself with the latest contraptions? Have you based your safety on the ephemeral measures of the world around you?
Like the Psalmist, for a short while, take your gaze away from the measures, principles, policies and gadgets around you, and focus on God. His nature guarantees you all you need. When you call him the Protector, he is both the One who protects and the One who gives protection. You cannot acknowledge God for who he is, and then go outside of God to get what you want. He is a complete package, with all of life and Godliness packaged in Him.
Everything your heart may behold today, remember, God made them all. He is the One who can secure you when all of life's security has been stripped away. How do you explain Daniel in the lions' den or the 3 Hebrew boys in the fiery furnace? If God would not secure you, you have everything to fear. But if God secures you, who is the person, born of woman, that can harm you? His time of favour is here.
